THE PROBLEM WITH THE RESOLUTION

Have you ever followed through with a New Year’s resolution to the end? If so, well done! If not, you’re definitely not alone.

In fact, according to a 2021 study conducted in the UK, nearly two-thirds – or 64% – of people abandon their resolutions within a month, meaning they don’t even make it to the end of January! While there are multiple reasons why individuals may be so quick to give up on their lofty goals so soon, we believe the following factors have the most substantial impact – plus,  we’ll tell you how to overcome them:

#1 THEY’RE LIMITING

The word resolution is defined as “the firm decision to do or not to do something.” That sounds pretty limiting if you ask us. The “all or nothing” mentality associated with resolutions requires near-perfect consistency and provides little room for error. This mindset does not provide the flexibility necessary to achieve growth, and can often leave one feeling defeated after they miss a workout, have a glass of wine at a party, or don’t see enough of a change on the scale – ultimately leading to giving up on the resolution.

Instead, we recommend setting realistic goals that focus on the process instead of the outcome. Set checkpoints along the way that allow you to see progress, no matter how small.

#2 THEY’RE TOO LARGE

Whether it’s a resolution or a goal, achievement can feel impossible if it’s too grand. This isn’t to say goals shouldn’t be big, but breaking them down into smaller increments and creating a solid plan for progress can make all the difference. Losing 50 pounds IS difficult, but aiming for 5-7 pounds a month all of a sudden seems doable. When the task is manageable, it’s achievable.

Standing at the foot of a trail looking up at the peak will make it seem out of reach – putting one foot in front of the other, committing to 10-minute spurts, taking needed breaks, that’s what gets you to the top.

#3 YOU DO THEM ALONE

At Aeon Future Health, this is the foundation upon which our philosophy is based on. We’re here to HELP people become the healthiest versions of themselves by providing them with the correct information, tools and motivation to keep going. We check in with our patients, we monitor their progress, and we provide guidance and changes when necessary. Goals are easier when we work on them together.
